The Ordinary Vegan - Sainsbury's Raspberry Jelly

It is always rare in a mainstream supermarket to find a gelatine-free jelly, and then when you occasionally do, they colour them with animal products making them unsuitable for vegans - boo!

Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to find this jelly is Sainsbury's which contains real fruit and no animal products and is labelled as vegan - yay! Be warned they are high in sugar though.

These jellies can be found for sale in the kiosk area of the store by the take away sandwiches, newspapers and cigarettes. They are currently on offer 2 for £2 and they are so refreshing in this summer heat.

These new sharing bag size crisps from McCoy's are for sale in Tesco at the moment for £1.99. They were recently on offer for 2 for £2 and they come in three flavours - all of which are vegan-friendly:

Sizzling BBQ Chicken
Chargrilled Steak & Peri Peri
Sea Salt & Black Pepper

I tried the BBQ Chicken and the Steak flavours and they were both delicious, full of flavour, really crunchy and great for parties and BBQs.

They may market themselves as "Man Crisps" but this vegan girl is quite a fan!

The Ordinary Vegan - Earth Balance Buttery Popcorn

Now for those of my readers in the USA, you may be wondering why I have never mentioned Earth Balance products before and my UK readers are probably wondering why this would be on TOV and not on Vegan Vox Reviews. Well my vegan friends, here are the answers.

US readers, here in the UK we do not have access to these wonderful vegan products by Earth Balance which is why I have never featured them before. UK readers, this is not a special product I have been sent for review...I found these at Tesco!! In large Tesco stores at the moment they are trialling American vegan, gluten-free and free-from products. I am hoping if they sell well they may become a regular feature so grab them whilst they are hot!

This huge 170g bag of Earth Balance Buttery Popcorn is labelled as vegan, gluten-free, is non-GMO and contains no trans fats.

They taste buttery and rich and how I remember non-vegan butter popcorn tasting. I was so excited to see these in Tesco. They sell for around £2 and they also had by Earth Balance: Sea Salt Kettle Chips, Peanut Butter Popcorn and Peanut Butter spreads.

The Ordinary Vegan - Sausages

A lot of people ask me what sausages I use in my cooking and where I get them from. Sometimes, I pick up vegan gourmet sausages from specialist shops and events, but mainly, I stick to two brands which can both be bought on the high street or at the supermarkets.

The first is Linda McCartney Sausages - the original style are vegan-friendly and say so on the front of the box. Be careful as some of the flavoured varieties contain egg. These sausages are perfect for breakfast and for sausage and mash. They can be cooked from frozen in the oven and can be purchased from all of the major supermarkets as well as Holland & Barrett. They retail for around £2 a box of 5.

The second is Vegetarian's Choice, now these sausages are grill or fry only and are available from Holland & Barrett. They are about half the price of the Linda McCartney sausages at around 99p per box of 5. They are thinner and a different texture to the Linda McCartney brand but these are great for sausage casseroles and stews, as they stay firmer when cooking in liquid. The Linda McCartney sausage tend to act like a sponge in a casserole and go a bit bloated and chewy.

Both of these are staples in my freezer for everyday meals. Which sausages do you use? Let me know in the comments below.

The Ordinary Vegan - Apple Crumble/Apple Strudel

This week on TOV, is the turn of shop-bought desserts. I have found that most of the supermarkets basic ranges of Apple Crumble and Apple Strudels are vegan-friendly. These are found in the the frozen desserts aisle of the supermarket and cost around £1 each. You just bake them from frozen and serve with vegan ice-cream, cream or custard. Delicious! These are great to keep in the freezer for last minute guests or late night munchies!

If home-cooked food is more your thing, I have my own crumble recipes here and here.

Come back tomorrow for another vegan recipe of the week. If you missed my exciting announcement on Saturday click here to read it!

The Ordinary Vegan - Mr Kipling Pies and Tarts

This week on TOV, I am looking at shop-bought bakery. It is so hard to find vegan items in the bakery aisle at supermarkets as this is traditionally where most of the products contain some kind of dairy or eggs. I mainly bake my own but if you are out and about or need something in for unexpected guests, Mr Kipling comes to the rescue as two of the main line of products are vegan-friendly.

The first is the Apple & Blackcurrant Pies. Strangely, the Apple Pies contain dairy, but the Apple & Blackcurrant do not! There are often other seasonal pies, mainly around Christmas, which sometimes are vegan too, last year they had a winter fruit pie selection which was vegan-friendly.

In addition to the pies, the Mr Kipling Jam Tart selection is also vegan-friendly and quite often both packets are on offer for 2 for £2 in the supermarkets. The regular price is around £1.49.

They don't taste as nice as home-made but they are tasty and they are good to have in the cupboard for times when you don't have time to bake.

If you prefer to make your own vegan food, come back tomorrow for the Vegan Recipe of the Week.

The Ordinary Vegan - Stir Fry Sauces

I love a stir-fry, they are healthy and quick and taste great. This week's TOV is looking at vegan-friendly stir-fry sauces. A couple of my favourites are Amoy Chow Mein Stir Fry Sauce and Blue Dragon Chow Mein Stir Fry Sauce.

There are many varieties to choose from and most of them are vegan-friendly. The Blue Dragon ones actually label vegan on the front to make it easier. A stir-fry is a great way to use up left over veggies. I love peppers, onions, water chestnuts, mange tout, mushrooms and tofu in mine along with some udon or rice noodles and you have a perfect quick meal. These sauces are sold at all supermarkets and Asian shops for between 65p-£1.

What are your favourite stir-fry combinations? Let me know in the comments below.

The Ordinary Vegan - Wheat Crunchies - Crispy Bacon Flavour

This week on The Ordinary Vegan, is the turn of Wheat Crunchies. The Crispy Bacon flavour is vegan-friendly and they come in single flavour multi packs at most of the supermarkets and Home Bargains. They can often be found on offer for around £1-£1.50 for a pack of 6.

Wheat Crunchies launched in the 1980s, disappeared for a while and was relaunched in 2012. These snacks are made by KP Snacks and contain no MSG, no artificial colours or flavourings, and are cooked in sunflower oil. Please note their other flavours are vegetarian but not vegan.

These are a lovely treat with a sandwich or salad and remind me of my childhood.

The Ordinary Vegan - Marmite

I get it! You either love it or you hate it, but Marmite as well as being vegan is full of great B vitamins and is a versatile ingredient. It's not just for spreading on toast. It tastes great in paninis, vegan cheese toasties, wrapped up in a pastry parcel, stirred into baked beans, add a teaspoon into soups, stews and casseroles too. You can add boiling water and make a yeasty drink and can spread it on crackers or dip breadsticks into it. Marmite is sold at all supermarkets, convenience stores, some newsagents and petrol stations.

Click here for one of my Marmite recipes.

How do you eat your Marmite?

The Ordinary Vegan - Lotus Biscuits and Spread

You may be familiar with Lotus Biscuits as the single or double portion packs you receive free with a coffee in a cafe or left on your tea tray in a hotel. The good news is that they are vegan and labelled so on the packets and on their website. They are delicious crunchy caramelised biscuits which go perfect with coffee. You can buy the large packet pictured above in most supermarkets and more recently, selected stores have started selling the Lotus Spread too.

The spread, which is sold under the name Speculoos on the continent, and as Caramelised Biscuit Spread in the UK, is a smooth spreadable paste version of the biscuit, great for use in baking, spreading on bagels, crusty bread and toast or dipping bananas in. It is very sweet and I can only eat a little at a time, but as a treat it is lovely, and adds a great flavour to cupcakes, flapjacks and frosting.

What are your favourite vegan biscuits? Share in the comments below.

The Ordinary Vegan - Inside a vegan kitchen

Many new vegans or those contemplating becoming vegan wonder if you need to buy lots of new products or fancy equipment in order to live a vegan lifestyle. So this week's The Ordinary Vegan is a bit different. I am going to show you around my kitchen!

Let me start by saying that the only thing you need in a vegan kitchen is a good chopping board, a set of good knives, a cooker and lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, grains, seeds, pulses, herbs and spices. Everything else is a choice. I love kitchen gadgets and so have more than most, but I spend most of my time in the kitchen making food, photographing food or writing about it!

These are my store cupboard essentials:

A range of oils, spices, vinegars, seasonings, nutritional yeast and stock cubes.

A range of tinned produce, vegetables, beans, lentils, chopped tomatoes and a quick veggie chilli if I'm feeling too tired to cook.

I have a savoury and sweet snack cupboard with naughty vegan treats in like nuts, crisps, crackers and biscuits.

A huge pile of cookbooks for meal ideas and inspiration. These don't need to be vegan cookbooks, many recipes can be easily adapted for a vegan diet.

In my fridge, I always have some non-dairy milk and butter, usually some vegan cheese, salad and lots of sauces. There is usually a tub of leftovers in the fridge for a quick lunch and some Jus-Rol pastry for quick and easy pies. Ooh, there's always a bar of dark chocolate in my fridge for when only dark chocolate will do!

In my freezer, I always have my own vegan ready meals. I always cook in large batches and freeze portions for after a hard day at work. You will often find some dairy-free ice-cream, homemade bread rolls and a few vegan burgers or sausages in my freezer too along with some frozen vegetables.

Moving onto my kitchen gadgets. I have a blender for soups, smoothies and sauces. A radio to listen to whilst I'm cooking and washing up! :-)

A food processor for breadcrumbs, pesto, salsas, chopping nuts, seeds, onions, and to use in baking.

A bread machine. I love my bread machine and I make all of my own pizza bases, bread rolls and loaves. Often I use the dough setting to do all of the kneading and mixing and proving and then bake in the oven for a lovely finish.

A pestle and mortar - I use this to grind herbs and spices, make dips and grind seeds and nuts.

The slow cooker is great for casseroles, soups, curries, stews and marinades.

Finally, a mixer. I do a lot of vegan baking in my kitchen and a good mixer makes light work of it!

I hope you have enjoyed the tour around my kitchen. If you love cooking and trying new recipes come back tomorrow for a brand new recipe of the week.

Big Vegan Love,
