The Ordinary Vegan - Fruit Sorbet - Last Days of Summer!

Every Monday on TOV I look at everyday items from main supermarkets that happen to be vegan friendly. This week it is the turn of sorbet. Yes, I am trying to cling onto the last of these summer days as the schools go back and the leaves start falling, our minds and stomachs will start thinking about hot filling desserts, so before that happens, I'm going to talk about sorbet.

Many sorbets are made from fruit, juice and water only, which makes them low fat, vegan and refreshing. Sorbets come in many fruit flavours such as raspberry, mango and lemon. They are icy cold, thirst-quenching and delicious. A word of warning though, some sorbets do contain milk so please check and they can give you brain freeze!!

Please don't leave us summer - we miss you already!

These sorbets are from Tesco and cost £2.50 but it is easy to make sorbets at home too. If you like home cooked vegan food please visit the blog every Tuesday for the Vegan Recipe of the Week. Also every Thursday on Vegan Vox Blog is Vegan Vox Reviews...reviewing vegan shops, restaurants, products and more.

Vegan Vox Reviews... Indigo Wholefoods - Birmingham

Last month I ventured over to Moseley in Birmingham, UK to visit Indigo Wholefoods. This is a cool independent health food shop in a lovely area of Birmingham with many vegan friendly cafes and restaurants nearby. It is definitely worth a visit if you are visiting Birmingham or live within the Midlands.

The shop isn't solely vegan but contains many vegan friendly products, and has a huge range of vegan cheeses, meats, burgers, sausages and ready meals.

They stock herbal teas, a large range of vegan and organic wines and beers.

They have loads of yummy confectionery including a basket of vegan creme eggs!

As well as all of these treats, there is a wide variety of health foods, pulses, beans, flours, tofu and organic fruit and vegetables.

They also stock skin care and beauty products as well as cupboard staples such as stock cubes, bullion, nutritional yeast and snack foods like biscuits, crisps, nuts, dried fruit, flapjacks, raw bars and cereals.

The owner George was super friendly and the shop was busy throughout my visit with customers greeted warmly and often by name. It feels like a real community store.

They have a loyalty card scheme which is unusual for small independent stores and organic food box delivery within the local area. I bought some 'nooch' and some Cheezly Pepperjack for my BBQ while I was there too.

What's not to love? I will be popping back in when I'm in the area. You can find Indigo Wholefoods at:

25 St Mary's Row
Moseley
Birmingham
B13 8HW

Every Day 9:30-6:30

Vegan Birthday Summer Garden Party

Yesterday was my wonderful friend Jay's birthday and last night she had her closest friends over for a vegan birthday party. Jay and her partner are really into raw vegan food and Jay rustled up some gourmet raw pakoras, a gorgeous summer salad, a courgette spaghetti with vegan pesto and a raw vegan cheesecake made with raspberries and cashew nut cheese. She also dehydrated some sweet potato and made some raw crackers!

I brought along the cooked vegan food of my homemade saag aloo, chickpea and potato curry and poppadoms. The entire banquet not only was super healthy and vegan but all gluten-free as Jay's partner is gluten-free.

Who says being vegan, raw or gluten-free means you can't eat well and party? Not I!

I will put up my recipes for the saag aloo and chickpea and potato curry over the next two Tuesdays as every Tuesday is recipe day here on the blog.

If you fancy chatting to me about vegan food or anything else you can email me or tweet me. I also take part in #VeganHour on Twitter 7pm (UK) every Tuesday.

The Ordinary Vegan - Review - Maryland Snapjacks Honeycomb

Hi and welcome to the first of a regular feature on my blog called 'The Ordinary Vegan'*. The purpose of this feature is to highlight everyday items sold in most major supermarkets which are vegan.

So, if you are just thinking about cutting down your animal products, dairy and meat, or are a new vegan starting out, these are easy items you can swap your regular products for in the supermarket without having to go to special vegan stores.

This week start by swapping your Maryland Cookies for these Maryland Snapjacks Honeycomb which cost around 99p . They are a honeycomb flavoured hard biscuit (cookie), sort-of like a ginger snap but honeycomb flavoured. Mr Vox says that they are lovely dunked in tea and coffee and they just happen to be vegan! Yay!

*Please note, I believe that no vegan is ordinary...we are all extraordinary for helping the world be a more peaceful, cruelty-free place ;-) VVx
