Vegan Vox Reviews...Tibits Restaurant, London

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to London to try out the new all-vegan days at Tibits Restaurant. Tibits is an all-vegetarian restaurant on Heddon Street, just off Regent Street in Central London. A few times a month, they have an all-vegan day at the restaurant, which means all of their buffet showboat is full of yummy vegan starters, salads, mains and desserts as well as an extensive drinks menu including fresh juices and vegan beers.

We arrived at the restaurant and were shown to our seat by the manager who was a lovely lady, full of useful information on the food and drinks and we were seated under a beautiful chandelier.

We had some soft drinks and cashew nuts whilst we were getting settled and then went up to look at the impressive buffet range.

The buffet consisted of a range of healthy salads, hot dishes, snacks and sides.

This is what I chose for my main meal:

Tabouleh, couscous, breaded tofu escalopes, ratatouille and lots of tasty vegetables.

Mr Vox had the following:

Pizza, crusty bread roll, salad, tofu slices, onion rings, guacamole and falafal. We both really enjoyed our meals, they were fresh and tasty and full of flavour. There was a good range of dishes to mix and match to suit all diets, including gluten-free and raw vegan.

You choose your items and then take your plate to be weighed at the till, the food is charged by weight to reduce food waste often associated with buffet restaurants.

Next we had some more drinks, Mr Vox went for a vegan beer by Brew Dog and I had a fresh Carrot, Apple and Ginger juice which was super refreshing.

Next, it was time for dessert. There was a nice selection of desserts on offer:

I went for fresh strawberries with cherry coconut cream, it was so nice and light.

Mr Vox had the sticky toffee pudding with chocolate cream - pure decadence.

We finished off with a coffee and a loyalty card, as we will definitely be returning!

Tibits is our new favourite London restaurant and we will be returning later this month.

The Ordinary Vegan - Iced Belgian Buns from Waitrose

Update: It has been reported in May 2015 that these are no longer vegan, see comments below for details.

This week's TOV is a yummy cake from Waitrose Essential's range. This pack of two iced buns costs a pound and they are available from the bakery section in Waitrose supermarkets. They have a delicious sultana and lemon filling and are vegan. Yay!

Vegan Recipe of the Week - Mandarin Cheesecake

This week's recipe is perfect for a dinner party. You can make these the night before or in the morning and just decorate them before your guests arrive.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

For the Base:
8 digestive biscuits
55g vegan butter - I used hard Stork
1 Tbsp golden syrup

For the Filling:
100g icing sugar
1 tub Tofutti Cream Cheese - plain
1 small orange/tangerine
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbsp corn flour
1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp almond milk

For the topping:
1 small tin of mandarins in juice, drained

Method:

Take the digestive biscuits, break them into quarters and put them into a food processor.

Pulse for around 20-30 seconds until crumbs.

Pour the biscuit crumbs into a mixing bowl.

Next, take the butter and golden syrup and warm over a low heat in a saucepan. Stir until melted and combined.

Pour the melted butter mixture into the mixing bowl with your digestive crumbs and stir to combine all of the mixture.

Take four deep ramekins and divide the mixture evenly between them. Press down with the back of a teaspoon until the mixture is firmly packed into the bottom of each dish.

Place the ramekins into the fridge for half an hour.

In a mixer bowl, place the icing sugar, vegan cream cheese, the zest and juice of a small orange, the vanilla extract, corn flour and almond milk. Warm up the coconut oil in a saucepan until liquid and add to the bowl. Starting off slowly with the whisk attachment, whisk the ingredients together until they are fully combined and a thick paste consistency.

Spoon the mixture into your chilled ramekins on top of your biscuit base. Smooth over the top and chill in the fridge for 5-8 hours or overnight.

Once chilled and set, remove the cheesecakes from the fridge and drain a small tin of mandarins.

Lay the mandarins on top of each cheesecake in an overlapping circle with a small mandarin piece in the centre.

Eat straight away or return to the fridge until ready to eat.

Eat and enjoy!
