The Ordinary Vegan - Iced Belgian Buns from Waitrose

Update: It has been reported in May 2015 that these are no longer vegan, see comments below for details.

This week's TOV is a yummy cake from Waitrose Essential's range. This pack of two iced buns costs a pound and they are available from the bakery section in Waitrose supermarkets. They have a delicious sultana and lemon filling and are vegan. Yay!

  1. I used to love these buns from Greggs years ago so am thrilled to see these are vegan! Yet another thing to add to my shopping list.

  2. I never would have thought to even check these out- so much Waitrose stuff has egg in it lately! (Even the seeded rolls, the packaged ones.) Sometimes I find vegan doughnuts in supermarkets, but those occasions are getting rarer and rarer. I think Waitrose baklava or namoura are vegan though; they used to sell them at the cake counter and I asked once- but that was a long time ago. I'm actually thinking of emailing Waitrose about their free-from section, which is now mainly gluten free breads (with egg) and they have got rid of the eggless mayo and dairy free parmesan. They need to know that vegan is going mainstream in the UK now and they should cater for us better! A freezer full of Quorn and egg added to lots of things doesn't cut it nowadays! (I don't mean to sound harsh, I love lots of Waitrose stuff, and they do have great tofu and miso.)

  4. I'm afraid these aren't vegan (anymore?): Thank you getting in touch about our Essential Waitrose Iced Belgian Buns, Mr Walker.
I've checked our product database and can confirm that these are not suitable for vegans.
I'm sorry for any disappointment this may cause.
    Kind regards

Thank you for your return email Eric.

I'm afraid our database only advises that there are dairy products in the buns, which make it unsuitable for vegans.

If you would like more detailed information, please let me know and I'll be happy to contact the buyer to find out.

    Kind regards

    1. That's not good news, thanks for sharing. Their online vegan list still has them listed though which is confusing for customers. http://www.waitrose.com/content/dam/waitrose/Inspiration/HealthandNutrition/How%20Waitrose%20Can%20Help/Suitable%20for%20Vegans%20Aug%202014.pdf
