The Ordinary Vegan - Fox's Party Rings

Fox's have reformulated their Party Rings recipe to get rid of the animal products and animal-derived colourants and they are now completely animal-free! Yay!

These Party Rings Minis bags are on offer at B&M Bargains at the moment for 89p. The new packets are labelled as suitable for vegetarians on the front and back. There may be old stock in some shops which are not suitable so please check the packets before you buy.

I contacted the company to check the vegan status of the products and they assured me there are no animal-derived ingredients, however they do manufacture biscuits which contain dairy at the same facility so they would not label them as vegan due to cross contamination/allergy risks.

Enjoy reliving your youth!

Vegan Vox Reviews...222 Veggie Vegan Restaurant - London

I visited this restaurant in Kensington, London last year before I started this blog and therefore do not have any photos of my food for you. However, I had such a great meal and experience that I wanted to review it for you anyway.

222 Veggie Vegan was my first ever visit to an all vegetarian restaurant. We visited at lunchtime for the buffet and I'm so glad I did. Everything on the lunchtime buffet was vegan with half of the dishes raw and gluten-free too.

The lunch buffet is great value for money, with an all you can eat sit in meal for £7.50 or a take out box for £5.50. I tried some of every option on the buffet - there was stir fry, noodles, salads, curry and rice.

I washed it down with a glass of organic agave-sweetened cola. All of the food is low fat, low salt, non-GMO, contains no artificial ingredients and is organic. They had clear labels on gluten-free and wheat-free options. They will make up allergy free specials on request and they had a hot soup and fresh bread option at lunch as well.

222 is a small restaurant but it wasn't overly busy when we visited. I have heard that it can get very busy in the evenings when they offer the full menu which is available to look at here.

The chef, Ben has been a vegan for a long time and is committed to great, healthy, vegan freshly cooked food - no frying or microwaves allowed!

The buffet is served 12-15:30 and dinner 17:30-22:30.

You can find 222 Veggie Vegan at:

222 Veggie Vegan Restaurant
222 North End Road
West Kensington
London W14 9NU

It is a few minutes walk from West Kensington and West Brompton underground stations. I can't wait to go back in the evening and try the a la carte menu, I've heard on the vegan grapevine that the burger is amazing! Lunch Buffet 5/5.

What are your recommendations for great value tasty vegan lunch restaurants? Comment below and let me know.

The Ordinary Vegan - Nakd Bars - raw vegan snack bars

This week on TOV, I'm talking all about Nakd Bars. These bars have really taken off recently and you can find them for sale almost everywhere, which is great news for vegans and raw vegans alike! I have seen them for sale at supermarkets, newsagents, department stores, health food stores, online retailers, direct online and at discount stores.

They are at all of the vegan expos and shows, and have fab taster counters where they have literally thousands of bars cut up for you to try in all of their flavours. My favourite flavour of the moment is Ginger Bread, but they have lots of different flavours including mint, mocha, banana, berry and many more.

They are made by Natural Balance Foods, which also make Nakd Protein Bars, Oatie Bars, Infused Raisins, Trek Protein Bars and Trek Protein Flapjacks.

Here's what their website has to say about Nakd Raw Bars...

Our simplest and most beloved bars. Just raw fruits and nuts smooshed together. Containing 100% natural ingredients with no added sugars or syrups,  these bars are also wheat, dairy and gluten free, and bursting with yummy goodness. With a soft, chewy texture they fill you up till your next meal and most count towards 1 of your 5 a day too. Ideal for lunchboxes, grabbing on the go and refuelling between meals!

So if you haven't tried these bars yet, go grab a couple. They are filling, tasty, healthy, vegan, gluten and wheat free, raw, made of fruit and fab! They retail for between 75-99p.

Come back tomorrow for my next Vegan Recipe of the Week!

The Ordinary Vegan - Reggae Reggae Jerk/BBQ Sauce

Every Monday on Vegan Vox Blog is the weekly feature - The Ordinary Vegan. Seemingly ordinary products sold in most shops and supermarkets that also happen to be vegan. Makes it easier when we're shopping!

This week it's the turn of the ubiquitous Reggae Reggae Jerk/BBQ Sauce by Levi Roots. Strangely, I suppose, for a sauce that is designed to go with meat, it is totally vegan friendly - yippee!

The sauce is a spicy Caribbean BBQ sauce which can be added to soups, stir-fry and stew, you can marinade tofu in the sauce before cooking or use it as a dipping sauce. It is great at a vegan BBQ.

There is a mild version available which is also vegan if you don't like too much spice.

I love mine with CoFresh Veggie Burgers in a home-made bread roll with Toffuti Mozzarella Style Slice and chips! Read my review on Cofresh's vegan range here.

There are Reggae Reggae cooking sauces also in the range which are also vegan and are great with some 'Chickn' pieces, onions and peppers served with rice and beans. For more recipes come back every Tuesday on Vegan Vox Blog for my Vegan Recipe of the Week.

It's Snack Saturday! - Crackerbread, Vegan cream 'cheese' and salsa.

It's Saturday, and you want to take it easy! This is a quick snack for lunch which I love. It's super easy and quick to make and tastes yummy!

Spread 4-6 crackerbreads with Garlic & Herbs Tofutti Vegan Cream Cheese and top with a home-made salsa (recipe to come soon) or a salsa from a jar. The hotter the better!

Top the crackers with some fresh green olives, slices of tomato and cucumber and serve with a fresh rocket side salad and a few jalapenos for an extra kick!

Serve with an ice cold lemonade and relax!

If you like vegan food, come by here every Tuesday for a new 'Vegan Recipe of the Week'. Don't forget I am on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google + and Pinterest as well. You can also follow my blog on Bloglovin' by clicking the button at the bottom of the page.

Vegan Vox Reviews...The One Earth Shop - Birmingham (Digbeth)

One very sunny afternoon in July, whilst in Birmingham for the Vegan Fair, I went to visit the lovely little vegan paradise in Digbeth that is One Earth Shop - Vegan Wholefood Store. The shop is next door to and operated by the same team who run The Warehouse Cafe - a vegetarian and vegan cafe/restaurant which I have yet to visit, but is on my must do list! The shop is small but has lots of gorgeous vegan delights once inside. There is a large refrigerator full of drinks, snacks, vegan cheeses, vegan meats, soy yogurts and much more.

The shelved area contained canned ready-meals and organic staples such as beans, pulses, tofu and tomatoes.

There was a good range of condiments, organic teas and coffees, nutritional yeast and stock.

In addition to lots of edible vegan produce, they stocked environmentally-friendly cleaning products, animal companion foods and a range of vegan-friendly drinks.

They had a baking section with gluten-free flours and well as organic wheat flours.

I got chatting to the friendly shop manager who offered to let me try a Shambhu's Mixed Berries Cheesecake from the freezer section (to review for this blog :-)), which also had a range of vegan ice creams, and a range of yummy vegan cheesecakes.

Despite the temperature in my car that day and the cheesecake looking a little worse for wear, it tasted delicious. I love cheesecake and it was one thing I never thought I'd be able to replace as a vegan, but Shambhu's have nailed this dessert down. It was creamy and not too sweet with a lovely swirl of berries to cut through the creaminess. I fell a little bit in love with this cheesecake :-) So a huge thanks to One Earth for a lovely visit and free cheesecake to review...hey, it's a tough job being a vegan blogger! ;-)

So next time you are in Birmingham city centre, take a five minute walk down into Digbeth (54 Allison Street, B5 5TH) and enjoy a little hidden oasis of vegan shopping pleasure at One Earth Shop.

Vegan Birthday Summer Garden Party

Yesterday was my wonderful friend Jay's birthday and last night she had her closest friends over for a vegan birthday party. Jay and her partner are really into raw vegan food and Jay rustled up some gourmet raw pakoras, a gorgeous summer salad, a courgette spaghetti with vegan pesto and a raw vegan cheesecake made with raspberries and cashew nut cheese. She also dehydrated some sweet potato and made some raw crackers!

I brought along the cooked vegan food of my homemade saag aloo, chickpea and potato curry and poppadoms. The entire banquet not only was super healthy and vegan but all gluten-free as Jay's partner is gluten-free.

Who says being vegan, raw or gluten-free means you can't eat well and party? Not I!

I will put up my recipes for the saag aloo and chickpea and potato curry over the next two Tuesdays as every Tuesday is recipe day here on the blog.

If you fancy chatting to me about vegan food or anything else you can email me or tweet me. I also take part in #VeganHour on Twitter 7pm (UK) every Tuesday.

My Vegan Journey - it started with a lamb...

Apologies now for how long this post will be but my vegan journey has also been a long one and one I would like to share with you.

I am 36 years old, and on my 36th birthday I made the long-time coming decision to become vegan. But this story begins 30 years ago really. When I was 6 years old, my grandmother’s best friend was a farmer. Every year in the springtime, we would drive out in the car, me, my Nan and Granddad to the farm during lambing season and I would get to play with the lambs, cuddle them and hold them and occasionally bottle feed any orphan or rejected lambs. This was one of the highlights of my year and something I really looked forward to.

I came from a very animal-friendly family (although all meat-eaters) and we always raised money for local animal shelters, animal rescue charities and always have had rescue animals sharing our home. Anyway, being 6 years old, it had never occurred to me that these beautiful creatures that I fed on the farm were the same thing my family served me up for dinner.

This particular year, after me rushing over to my granddad to tell him how lovely the lambs were, he made some wry comment about how they would be even lovelier with mint sauce. I burst into tears and begged my Nan to tell me that these lambs were not the ‘lamb’ I ate with my Sunday roast. Of course, she couldn't lie to me and whilst shooting evil looks over at my grandfather she gently tried to explain that all of the meat we eat comes from such animals. Well I was absolutely distraught. I cried all the way home in the car and sobbed myself to sleep. And when my mum and dad came to pick me up the next morning, I begged them to let me have all of the lambs as pets and never to make me eat them again.

Thus began my journey to vegetarianism.

It started with lamb at aged 6 and slowly as I got older and realised about other animals, I began excluding them from my diet or refusing to eat them.

I then watched a documentary when I was 11 years old about factory farming practices and made the decision to become fully vegetarian. I remember telling my parents and them thinking that it was a phase and maybe some of my friends at school were doing it and it would soon pass, so they played along with it and didn't serve me any meat from that day.

In those days, there were very little vegetarian meat substitutes and my family had little knowledge of vegetarian diets so I ate what the family ate, but without the meat. My mum took me to the doctor and asked if there were any supplements I should be having and he put me on Iron tablets. I have been vegetarian ever since and I am still the only member of my family (immediate and extended) who doesn't eat meat or fish.

So after 25 years of being vegetarian, what made me become vegan? Well I have an allergy to eggs and have never eaten them; I dislike the taste of milk and have not drunk it since I was 5. I very rarely ate yogurts as they tasted too much like milk and have always avoided animal by products, leather, gelatin, animal derived food colourings, rennet, suet and always sourced cruelty-free beauty products since the day I became vegetarian. I only ever ate honey as an ingredient, never on its own and I don’t like wine or beer and so that just left my two vices – chocolate and cheese!

I will get this out of the way now – My name is “Vegan Vox” and I am a cheesaholic!

This is the sole reason that for the last few years every time I met anyone new and described my dietary habits, they would say “oh, so you’re practically vegan then?” And the niggling addict inside me would ignore them and say, but you can’t live without cheese. So I would bury my guilt, avoid reading too much about the dairy industry and carry on eating cheese with everything. And I mean everything. Soft cheese, cheese sauce, cream cheese, cheese spread, flavoured cheese, mature cheese, cheese with crackers, even those awful cheese slices you serve with burgers! I truly believed that even if I could handle switching to dark chocolate I could never give up cheese, and I hear so many other people say the same thing.

So what has changed? Well last year I went to the West Midlands Vegan festival in Wolverhampton and was inspired by the range of choices for vegans available now which didn't even exist when I became vegetarian. There are vegan cupcakes, sausages, spreads, milk and yes...cheese. So I had a long hard think about it and decided to ditch the cheese (and all other dairy) for good in January this year and become fully vegan. It hasn't been easy, and the cheese devil on my shoulder has taunted me several times, but I have made a commitment and if I truly want to be a supporter of animal rights and welfare then it felt hypocritical continuing to eat dairy products.

So why this blog? Well I felt that I cannot be the only one who has fought their cheese addiction or maybe people are still battling theirs and thinking about becoming vegan. Also I was the resident vegetarian expert among friends and family after my quarter of a century commitment so always felt like I had the answers, recipes, knew what to look for on labels etc. Now all of a sudden, I feel like the new kid at school, I am learning as I go along how to veganise my meals, what is and isn't vegan friendly and thought a blog would help others to share in this new journey with me.

Vegan Vox is exactly that a vegan voice, it will be a vegan lifestyle blog, sharing my journey with you. There will be recipes, food reviews, travelling as a vegan posts, restaurant reviews, events, vegan friendly companies I have found or products I am trying, the never ending search for good cheese substitutes and everyday ordinary supermarket items which I have discovered are vegan and how you can build them into any diet or lifestyle. I am not a health freak, I love junk food as well as healthy food, I love puddings and cakes and chocolate, I probably should exercise more but I just want to share with you that anyone can become vegan.

If along the way I trip up or make mistakes with my veganism, please feel free to gently correct me and help me back on my path, I'm still learning. Please don't leave abusive comments or sarcasm. Veganism is about respect for all living beings, that includes humans, which includes me!

Thank you for sharing in my journey with me. VVx
